Theatre, film, TV, voice overs, animation, audiobooks, commercials, dubbing – these are just some of the employment opportunities for today’s actor. They all involve skilled voice use.

It used to be a given that voice work was the cornerstone of actor training, an essential, valued and respected set of skills that drama schools prioritised and employers recognised as fundamental for the job.

Now there is a trend by many against what is seen as formal training, with drama schools cutting the number and frequency of voice classes. There is even a challenge by some to the previously uncontested ‘first principle’ of acting: the need to be both audible and intelligible.

Voice work clearly needs a make over and much better PR.

With increasing complaints of inaudibility in film, TV and theatre, the importance of voice work is obvious but how to teach it?

Actors will almost always now be amplified, even on stage. Contrary to what is claimed, it does not solve the problem of inaudibility or intelligibility.

Voice teachers need new guidelines, tools and approaches to solve these problems and to help fight against a misunderstanding of what it means to be natural.

This workshop will provide explanations, rationales and exercises to assist voice teachers in preparing actors for the real world of employment they will encounter.

Topics covered will include:

* Main training objectives – have they changed and what are they?

* Amplification – understanding its limitations

* Voice use and microphones – stage, film and TV

* Training actors for multi media - stage, film and TV

* Projection and clarity in all accents

* Voice – Speech – Text; Breakdown of key skills

* Q&As

Plus much more!!

Effective and well integrated voice work is inseparable from great acting and all actors deserve great voice work.

Join me as I share over 30 years of experience, teaching students and coaching elite actors across a wide range of genres and styles, in film, theatre and TV.
